IDSS Faculty Member Caroline Uhler Promoted to Associate Professor

IDSS faculty member Caroline Uhler has been promoted to Associate Professor without Tenure, effective July 1, 2018.

Dr. Uhler received a PhD in Statistics from the University of California Berkeley in 2011. She held the position of Assistant Professor at IST Austria until 2015, when she joined MIT as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a core faculty member of IDSS. She is currently the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Assistant Professor of EECS and IDSS.

Dr. Uhler’s expertise is in the general area of algebraic statistics, a field that applies algebra, graph theory, and optimization to statistical modeling. She has developed new algorithms applied to large heterogeneous data sets across a series of applications and has broken new ground to provide a systematic approach to studying graphical models. With deep understanding of statistics, applied mathematics, and biology, she has developed a model to explain why different cells emerge from the same DNA structure.

Dr. Uhler has received multiple awards, including the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, a Sloan Research Fellowship, and an NSF CAREER Award. She was a plenary speaker on the subject of algebraic statistics during the 2017 SIAM Conference on Applied Algebraic Geometry, and serves on the MIT EECS admissions committee and the Broad Institute Fellows selection committee.
